Ik herinner me hoe kaal de kalkwitte wanden van calvinistische kerken konden zijn. Ze werden niet met leven gevuld door schilderijen of beelden, als in een kathedraal. Er heerste een iconoclastisch en puriteins regime.
Nu het Stedelijk Museum CS gesloten is, zitten we helemaal zonder museum. De wanden zijn niet eens leeg - we hebben er gewoonweg geen. Voor een museumman is dat een hard gelag, omdat hij geen kunstwerken ziet en kan laten zien. Dat is een vorm van visueel vasten.
Het is een zekere ironie van de geschiedenis dat het Stedelijk nu onderdak vindt in een huis dat vanaf de late middeleeuwen tot 1578 als parochiekerk functioneerde en dat daarna omgedoopt werd in een protestantse kerk zonder 'beelden'. Die keerden echter weer terug toen De Nationale Stichting De Nieuwe Kerk dit monument ging beheren en het transformeerde in een actief kunst- en cultuurcentrum, met een internationaal tentoonstellingsprogramma.

Omdat het schip, het koor, de zijbeuken, de kapellen en de dooptuin van De Nieuwe Kerk met zijn kolommen, balustrades, koorhekken, kansels, grafzerken, gebrandschilderde ramen, praalgraf, grafkelder en orgel voor een tentoonstelling over moderne kunst en religie een al te uitbundig decor vormde, werd de rust en stilte van de witte kubus gezocht. In een kakefonische kathedraal gaat de betrekkelijke autonomie van kunst nu eenmaal teloor. Ruim een eeuw geleden had de negentiende eeuwse architect van het Stedelijk Museum, A.W. Weissman, al een vooruitziende blik toen hij het museum opvatte als een pakhuis voor kunst en niet als een kathedraal, zoals zijn tegenvoeter Cuypers van het Rijksmuseum dat wel deed. Zijn ideaal was wat we nu een warehouse, een loft zouden noemen.
Naar ontwerp van Mels Crouwel en Gilian Schrofer is er een klein modern museum gebouwd in De Nieuwe Kerk, in de vorm van een kruis, met ruimtes die qua sfeer vooruitwijzen naar het nieuwe Stedelijk. En dat in een laat-gothisch godshuis. Dat heeft iets van vloeken in de kerk. Maar die tegenstelling geeft juist een bijzondere lading aan de tentoonstelling Heilig Vuur - Religie en spiritualiteit in de moderne kunst.

In die pure ruimtes wordt zichtbaar hoe beschouwelijk, ja vergeestelijkt, de figuratieve en verhalende kunst van Kirchner, Soutine, Bacon en Gilbert & George wel niet is. Anderzijds blijkt de abstracte kunst van Malevich, Mondriaan, Barnett Newman en Yves Klein een waar feest voor het oog, zoals vanaf aanstaande vrijdag te zien zal zijn. Daarbij blijkt hoe vol leven het werk van de strengste abstracte schilders wel niet kan zijn. De zuivere patronen en kleuren van Mondriaan houden niet op aan de rand van het schilderij maar zetten zich voort in de wereld en de iconen van Malevich lijken te zweven in ander dimensies. Kunst kent geen grenzen, maar zoekt het leven op.

I'm looking at working for them, the job sounds great good salary nice location however its all sounding to good to be true so if anyone has ever came across the devere group or worked for them I'd very much like to hear your experience. If you were a client of theirs, where their agents pushy or stressed? If you worked for them how easy is it to aquire your own leads and which ways of doing this worked for you? They say I have to be upto speed and get 3-4 appointments per day by the second week. Is this achievable for most or do they go through a lot of staff who fail? Also what basic salary do they pay or is it totally commission only? Any other advice you'd like to give me?
