Stedelijk Museum building excavations concluded

● restoration nearing completion

● expected hand-over date: December 2009

● expected re-opening: March/April 2010

Carolien Gehrels, head of the City of Amsterdam's culture committee and its representative as client for the building work at the museum, recently attended a ceremony to mark the completion of excavations for the Stedelijk's new annex. She spoke briefly about the construction process and schedule, announcing that the hand-over of the entire building is expected to take place in December 2009, after which the museum can re-open to the public in March/April 2010.

The completion of the foundations is an important milestone: now that the basement has also been pumped out and the roof can be made watertight, it will be possible to position the steel skeleton of the "bathtub" and cover it with Twaron fibre panels. This will be accomplished in 2009.

The construction process can be followed via www.stedelijkindestad.nl, with short films about the building work, an animation of the new building and interviews (in dutch).
